Here at Fahrenheit Motors, we’re passionate about all things German engineered, and let's be honest, few brands capture our attention quite like Audi. With their sleek designs, sophisticated technology, and "Vorsprung durch Technik" (that's "progress through technology" for those of us who didn't take German class) motto, they've cemented their place as a leader in the luxury car world.
But beyond the obvious, there's a whole world of quirky history, clever engineering, and cool hidden features that you might not know about. So, next time you're at a car meet or just trying to impress your friends, you'll have some fun facts up your sleeve.
Audi - A Name with a Story
Have you ever wondered about the name "Audi"? It's not just a cool-sounding word. The company's founder, August Horch, had to leave his first car company due to a dispute. When he started his new venture, he couldn't use his own name (Horch & Co.). So, he got creative. "Horch" is the German word for "listen," so he simply translated it to Latin. And just like that, "Audi" was born!
The Four Rings Aren't an Olympic Knock-Off
This is a common misconception, but the iconic four rings have a very specific meaning. In 1932, four German automobile manufacturers—Audi, Horch, DKW, and Wanderer—merged to form Auto Union AG. Each ring in the logo represents one of those original companies, a symbol of their unity and shared history.
Crash Testing Before It Was Cool
Today, crash testing is a standard, heavily regulated practice. But did you know Audi was a pioneer in the field? Way back in 1938, they would push a car down a hill in front of spectators to demonstrate its safety and durability. While a bit less scientific than today's tests, it was a groundbreaking concept at the time!
The Passenger Mirror Trick
This is one of our favorite hidden features on newer Audis, and it’s a total game-changer for parallel parking. When you put the car in reverse, if you have the side mirror adjustment switch set to the passenger side, that mirror will automatically tilt down to show you the curb. No more guessing if you're about to scrape a wheel! You can even adjust the angle it dips to and the car will remember your preference.
The Emergency Key Fob Hack
Ever had your key fob battery die on you? It's a frustrating moment. But on many modern Audis, there's a clever workaround. Most models have a small, marked spot on the center console or in a cup holder with a key symbol on it. If you place your dead key fob directly on that spot and press the start button, the car will still recognize the key and allow you to start the engine. It's a lifesaver when you're in a pinch!
A Dash of Porsche Influence
Did you know that some of Audi's most legendary performance models have a touch of Porsche magic? The very first RS model, the Audi RS 2 Avant from the '90s, was a joint project with Porsche. As a nod to the collaboration, it featured Porsche's brakes and even had the Porsche logo on the rear tailgate and grille. It was a true icon and the start of a legendary performance lineup.
There you have it—a few little tidbits that make us love Audis even more. It’s a brand built on a foundation of innovation, from its name to its engineering, and we’re always excited to see what they’ll come up with next.
